GIOVANNI OFFREDI FOR SAPORITI CHAISE LOUNGE (1970s ITALY)
Giovanni Offredi (born 1927, Milan–died 2007, Milan) was famous for his postmodern approach attributed to his non-tradition design background. Unlike his peers he was not an architect nor did he start designing early in his professional career. Instead, Offredi partially fits the career path of some of the talented contemporary designers who pursue product design outside of a formal education in architecture.
Partnering with Sergio Saporiti, the owner of Italian design shop and furniture maker Saporiti formally in 1970, Offredi would go on to design some of the most unique designs of the time including this very special Chaise Lounge. One of the designers to pre-empt the Memphis Design Era of the 1980s, this Chaise is a clear indication of the post-modern era to come, using unique form combined with progressive materials to deliver a beautiful elegant piece that is as unique as it is comfortable.
This particular example features the original metallic leather with contrasting piping, that whilst displays significant patina still displays well overall and is soft and supple. The steel frame has been refinished in a hard wearing enamel in deep blue, wonderfully offsetting the metallic light blue leather upholstery.
The piece is missing the original gas-lift which a replacement may be sourced upon fitted on request.
