1970s KAZUKI FLOOR LAMP (NUMBER 2) BY SIRRAH ITALY

A$1,299.00

This 1976 lamp by the Japanese-born designer Takahama Kazuhide is made of white fabric stretched over an aluminium frame. Named after one of his children, the Kazuki was made in three sizes—1, 2, and 3—by the Italian lighting company Sirrah. The Kazuki combines a sculptural solidity with a ghostly lightness, bringing a contemporary Japanese sense of abstraction to the lively, pop-infused Italian design of this period.

The lamp was mentioned at the "Compasso d'oro" prize in 1979.

This particular 'number 2' example is in very good vintage condition, with some small markings, piling to the shade but otherwise excellent and fully functional.

Available to view at our Alexandria Studio or please contact us should you have any questions about this or any of our available pieces. Domestic and international shipping available - contact us for more information.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Kazuhide Takahama, born in 1930 in Nobeoka, Japan, was a prominent designer known for his innovative contributions to furniture and lighting design. He studied architecture at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, graduating in 1953. His career took a pivotal turn when he designed the Japanese Pavilion for the 1957 Milan Triennale, where he met Dino Gavina, an influential Italian furniture entrepreneur. This encounter marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration that would shape his future work.

In 1963, Takahama moved to Bologna, Italy, where he began working with Gavina's companies. His prolific career saw him creating iconic pieces for renowned brands such as Knoll, B&B Italia, and Cassina. His design philosophy emphasized minimalist aesthetics and innovative use of materials, often blending Japanese and Western elements to create unique forms that resonated with both cultures.

Takahama's notable designs include the Tulu Chair (1968), characterized by its sled base and floating backrest, and the Naeko Sofa (1958), which became a bestseller. Other significant works include the Suzanne Sofa (1965), which pioneered foam block construction, and the Bramante Cabinet Series with its vibrant lacquer finishes. His versatility extended beyond furniture; he also designed bus shelters for Bologna and contributed to the city’s international airport.

Kazuhide Takahama passed away in Bologna in 2010, leaving behind a rich legacy in design. His work continues to be celebrated for its elegance and innovation, with many pieces still in production today. Takahama's unique blend of Japanese aesthetics and Italian craftsmanship has secured his place as a significant figure in 20th-century furniture design, appreciated by new generations of design enthusiasts.
